Film Chain

Film Chain

  • This is a introduction with some information on the film chain.

Production

  • With producing a film there are a lot of stages. Starting with selecting a script for the movie along with the source of finance, so they are able to pay for props, filming equipment, staff wages and more in order to pay for the things needed to make the movie a success. They involve things like the scenes edited with any sound effects or theme tunes to be added over the filming also adding titles and credits at the end of the film.

  • A very well known producer is Michael Mann also the producer of Heat.

A main studio is Walt Disney pictures they have control of a large 14.3% of films in Northern America. Walt Disney Pictures also own some major companies/brands for example Marvel studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar.

  • The ownership of the studio might have an impact on the films being made for example they might decide to make films all focused at a specific target audience.
  • A major film producer advertising or promoting a film at a film festivals for it to be sold in the cinemas.

Distribution

  • Film distribution is the stages in making a movie to be viewed by an audience.
  • Usually the person that'll distribute a film is the producer, but this doesn't always have to be the case sometimes it would be a group of people who distribute the film.
  • The traditional way of distributing films were by putting them on film reels. This made them scarce as there was a limited amount and took a long period of time to get to the cinema for audience viewing.
  • A newer way of distributing films are through digital distribution which makes it cost effective and the public can view films online and on DVD's which are available at reasonable prices.
  • Film festivals are usually done by governments or film societies, this gives a chance for unknown producers to make themselves along with their films more well known.
  • A distributor might decide to distribute their film on a particular weekend than another due to the fact it might be a week where people are going to be looking for a new movie or it might be a weekend where they know more people are going to be at home therefore distribute the film on that weekend.
  • It is important for a film to secure a good distribution deal because if they don't have a good deal then the movie wouldn't be as well known as it should be. Also if it doesn't get a good deal it would not be able to be viewed in all cinemas.

Marketing

  • The new movie has to be advertised so people can become familiar with the film being made. This is different to film distribution because the marketing is to do with advertising to the public whereas distribution is more about getting to a producer.
  • The following are different examples of the films being marketed (toys with a happy meal, bus banners and trailers)

  • Some films are produced in one country but are able to be advertised in another for example Spider-Man being made in America but being advertised on billboards and trailers in Spain.

Exhibition

  • Some ways we as audiences get to see films are by mainly going to the cinemas, being viewed on some channels e.g Sky Movies and services online for example Netflix.
  • Box office could be used to talk about the huge success of a film and the commercial of it.
  • The money from a successful film will be partially shared with actors etc but mainly gone to the producer.
  • Cinema makes their money from selling tickets and mainly from the food and drinks being soled.
  • Cinema's do deals or they would make a specific day cheaper for tickets also they would view the latest films for the public this way they won't be able to view the film at home or make it more appealing to watch at cinema's rather than their home.

BFI

  • The BFI is a British film institution to encourage the development of arts and film.
  • The BFI are mainly required to encourage more well known films to be made from Britain to encourage the film industry in the country.
  • This helps the British film industry a lot because this way they have support and guidance through the BFI in making British movies more attracted to a wider audience and more applicable to view world wide.
