Film Chain
Film Chain
Production
There are three main stages in film production:
- Pre-production
- Production
- Post-production
Pre-production- is where all the
planning is done before filming begins. It is the process where ideas are developed and
where the planning is essential to carry the process on to Production. Examples
would be doing research on the film taking notes or creating storyboards for
specific scenes and creates a visual image as well as helping them to decide what
they should include in each scene such as costume, planning the
location/setting as well as the props, the cast, sound/lighting and the visual
effects (all these examples are Mise en scene). This is where the final touches
are made to the complete the movie and is where the script/planning is
concluded.
Production- this is where the filming begins to take place,
and all the planning from the pre-production is used in the scenes. At this
stage it is impossible to cancel the film because of all the financial support.
At this stage more people are hired as a part of the crew to start the filming
process such as a picture editor, assistants directors, sound editors etc.
Production is the
most intense stage because everything must be filmed carefully to make sure
that all the details planned in the pre-production are included in the
individual scenes this is because it is not easy to redo particular scenes
exactly the same as it was filmed before, for example every time a scene is
taken it puts across a different effect and a different feeling.
Post
Production-
this is the final
stage of the production process; this
is where the editing of the film begins. The editor produces a rough cut. By editing they establish which
shots/scenes are the best and decide the order the film will be in, after this
stage has been completed the editor uses the scenes to create a final cut. The
visual effects, sounds, special effects, graphics and music is added onto the production of the film, once
they decided it is adequate to view they send of the film to be approved.
Main Producers Of
Films In America
Net
Worth- $3 billion.
Columbia Pictures- Doug Belgrad who is the principal partner.
20th Century Fox- Richard D. Zanuck
How might the ownership of the studio have an
impact on what films the studio makes?
If studios focus on films with a target
audience of children, teens or adults then they will only make films, which
will be suitable for these particular age groups. For example, the Nickelodeon
studios, or Walt Disney produce films that do not include adult scenes and they
make sure that it does not include bad words because their films are targeted to
younger viewers and it needs to appeal to them. However studios such as 20th
century will include adult scenes and cursing words, because they need to
attract older views to their film.
Independent Production- is when a film is mainly produced outside the film studio system.
Distribution
What does distribution mean?- film distribution is the process of making films and presenting it to the audience to observe (watch).
What is the traditional way of distributing a film?
The traditional way of distributing a film is, once the movie is completed the distributors decide on how they are going to release the film and decide on the type advertisements they are going to use to attract the targeted audience. Screenings slots are booked in the cinemas for the film. After planning how to advertise the movie, the distributors now have to use the media almost everywhere i.e. youtube, advertisements on the buses etc, for everyone to be aware the movie is out. A couple of days before the film release the cinema receives the disk with the movie. Finally the film is shown in the cinemas for quite a bit of time if the movie has very high amounts of viewers.
Another traditional way would be by creating the movies on film reels, this way there is less copies of the film and it takes a very long time to distribute to the movie theatre. This are more secure options because the movies will first be displayed in the cinema and there is no chance in getting hacked.
What might be a newer way of distributing a film?
A modern way of distributing films would be through Netflix, Sky movies or through e-mails. this will be effective because the sites give free trials to use the software which means most people will carry on using the sites which means they will receive the brand new movies. This will also be more effective because the distributors would not need to produce DVD copies instead they can send or publish the film electronically which is more simple, easy and fast. By distributing this way it costs less. Distributing the movies digitally is more effective because it is much more simple to send the movie as a computer file then having a hard copy.
Film Festivals
Film festivals are annual events, it is where films are presented in bigger venues or cinemas for example a movie premiere, they are usually set in the capital of a country e.g London where the populations are high, this way they attract more viewers.
The most well-known film festival took place in the cities Venice, Cannes and the Berlin international film festival and many more.
Marketing
Marketing is basically the process in advertising and promoting the film, this method makes sure that the film gains a significant amount of attention and gains recognition all around the world to capture the audiences attention.
The difference between marketing and distribution
Marketing is the process of selling the movie/merchandise
whereas distribution is displaying the product to different audiences on a
variety of media platforms.
Press Junket
This is where the press interview some of the casts mainly the actors/actresses, screen writers and directors they are all invited to a place i.e comic-con and are asked questions on their experience while filming.
By using these methods it raises awareness that the movie is going to be successful and it creates a lot of publicity because they are viewed on channels which are watched the most such as CBS. By having these interviews it gives the audience an insite to what they should be expecting and allows them to view special parts of the movies as exclusives. It also gains a large audience and makes the fan base grow.
Exhibition
Ways us as audience engage in films today:
- Television/On demand
- Cinema
- Netflix
- Premieres/Film Festivals
- Youtube
- DVD's
- Sky movies
- Ipads, Iphones, Apps
Box Office
Box office for a film is the amount of money
that the film has made. The box office is useful because it shows how success the
film is, the more money the film makes the more people have seen it.The film distributors gain most of
their profit from the film and the money which is left over goes to the cinemas that displayed the film to the audience. Cinemas make most of their profit from the things they sell i.e. popcorn and drinks.
